Are white cloud mountain minnows and fancy goldfish compatible?

I am planning on setting up a large 10 gallon tank with five fancy goldfish and a few white cloud mountain minnows.

Are they compatible? Any previous experiences and good information would be greatly appreciated.

Oh.. and no silly jokes please.

  1. Now that you have edited it to say 100gals, yes that should work.

    Larger common goldfish are likely to eat White Clouds, but the fancy goldfish aren't fast swimmers and are unlikely to be able to catch a White Cloud, so they are generally OK together.

  2. These beautiful minnows are a great addition to a coldwater or sub tropical aquarium. They take the middle of the tank and can be very greedy when it comes to food.(well aren't all fish?) the shortfinned can go with zebra danios for the top and peppered corys and weather loaches for the bottom if you have a tank more than 4ft at 21 or 22*c. They can go in coldwater with small goldfish. Best kept with fish that can't fit them in their mouths.

    It should be fine, but make sure the fancy goldfish are not big enough to swallow them. There are no aggression issues. Good luck! ^_^

  3. yes those are tho only fish compatable with goldfish. The reason is they both prefer cold water.

  4. Hi, Yes they are however I would not put the together. Because in time your goldfish will get to big for them. You see white cloud only get to be about 2 inches in size and goldfish can grow to be over 12 inches in size.

    Your tank is way to small for goldfish. Goldfish can grow to be over 12 inches in size as adults. So you see for every inch of adult fish you need at least 1 gallon of water and with goldfish I would suggest 2 gallon of water per inch of adult fish. 12 inches x 2 gallons = 24 gallon of water per goldfish, and you have 5 of them 24 gallons x 5 fish = 120 gallon tank for just the 5 goldfish.

  5. a 10 gallon tank for 5 fancy gold fish um let me see.

    are you mad you would need at least a 50 to 80 gallon tank for 5 fancy goldfish.

    White cloud minnows will get eaten by your gold fish

  6. Good lord, if you put 5 fancies in just with each other you can forget the minnows, they will be the least of your concerns.  A 10 gallon tank isn't sufficient for one fancy goldfish, let alone 5 and some additional minnows.  You really need to do your research on proper goldfish homing.  Try www.kokosgoldfish.com or www.liveaquaria.com.

    Goldfish produce an ENORMOUS bioload and therefore require 20 gallons for the first one and 10 gallons for each additional with a filtration system of double this.  So, for 5 you would need a 60 gallon tank and a 120 gallon filter.  Extra aeration always helps.  You need to cycle the tank before you add any fish and once cycled introduce new fish slowly.  For example, cycle your tank and add one goldfish, see how he adjusts, a week or two later add a new one.  Plopping them in too small a tank will cause them to die from the ammonia build up, probably within hours.  Couple that with not cycling the tank and adding them too soon and they'll be dead in no time.  This is the number one reason fish die is too small a tank and uncycled conditions.

    Once you've decided on the size of your tank (sorry, again, 10 won't do it for goldies) you can then decide how many goldfish you have room for and if there are room for minnows.  I do keep gold white clouds with my goldfish but I have 4 fancy goldfish and 6 gold minnows in a 60 gallon tank with a 120 gallon filter.  At first the goldfish will chase and try and eat the minnows, they may even suceed.  But usually all will settle and they'll learn to live with one another.  I have found that my gold white clouds do better in the goldfish tank than the ones that are in a tropical tank with a higher temp.

    Hope this helps and good luck! : )

  7. I think they should be OK- I had normal minnows & goldfish together at one point

    Ask at the pet shop if unsure and make sure there will be enough room for all of them and they don't have to have certain numbers (some like to be in large groups)

    Good luck with the fancy goldfish- They're tricky to look after!!!!

  8. thats a tiny tank. unless you have some super superior filtration system i think MAX 2 goldfish and a few white clouds. but ideally you should not get goldfish for a 10 gallon tank.

    ~~~~then yes! great choice on fish
  9. These fish a very compatible. Their temperature range is almost identical, and so is their life span. This is a good choice. You're clever.
  10. Fancy goldfish don't get to be 12 inches so a 100 gallon tank should be plenty for 5 of them.
    White clouds are compatiable with them, however they are much smaller. Once the goldfish get larger they will try to eat the white clouds. Fancy's are much slower than them so they should have a fighting chance.
    I say go for it, try it for a while and see how it goes I think it should work just fine.
    Just keep in mind when you have 5 8" goldfish and at least 6 1.5" fish you may have issues.
    White clouds live for about 5-7 years and goldfish live for 20+ but I think you should be fine.
