  1. All plants of the genus rubus are edible, which includes all blackberries, rasberries, salmonberries, thimbleberries, etc..  If it is definitely a wild blackberry, it is edible and delicious.  Wild blackberries are very distinctive, and very common, you are probably already familiar with them, but if not, look at the pictures in the included link.

Be careful picking them, they are very thorny.  I've found that heavy jeans, tall boots, and leather chaps are ideal.

  2. Hmm, that depends on whether you are definitely talking about wild blackberries, which are not poisonous, or generic black berries, which could be poisonous (or, at least, noxious). Many flowering plant species have black (or indigo) berries, and not all of them are palatable for humans. Blackberries grow on thorny shrubs, not "thorn trees", which is why I make the distinction...

  3. no actually I went on a walk with my dog and ate some from a bush today....and I'm fine. We always did it as kids too!
