Your computer will run just fine if you don't update it. However, updates include bug fixes, security fixes, and many other things. I would recommend installing updates if you can. However, they are not necessary and can be easily turned off in the Control Panel.

no it is not necessary, but is highly recommended. Just in case your program has a much needed patch, you get the automatic fix. I have mine set to download the updates during shutdown. Thus It doesn't use my bandwidth while I am surfing and downloading stuff form the net. And downloads and installs while I am not using my computer. The next time I turn it on the updates are already completed.

Yes.  Like every other piece of software, Vista has bugs, and some of them are security-oriented.  Install at least the Security updates from Microsoft monthly.
