Are windows update necessary?(for vista users)?

I"m annoyed by the constant updates that windows recommends to download and install that slows my computer down. I've installed windows service pack update before and my computer didn't boot afterwards. I've been considering to choose the "never search for updates" options. do they matter at all?

Yes, definitely with vista, beside security, it gives the computer performance, stability, and reliability. You should one day when your not using the computer or before you go to sleep, download the updates so when you return to your computer, your computer would be ready and you computer won't slow down either. So I recommend you keep the updates on!!
