  1. I play chess & have since I was young.

I'm a grandmother now & still enjoy a good game with a worthy opponent. ;)

  2. My Dad taught me how to play chess many many years ago and we used to enjoy playing a lot.  Then he taught me to play backgammon and that sort of took over.

I don't even remember how to play chess (it's been that many years ago!) but I remember I loved the strategy side of the game even tho it could get boring sometimes.

  3. Some women play chess and are very good at it, but if you go to a chess club or chess tournament and find 20 people there -- the odds are that 19 or all 20 will be guys.

But some women are amazingly good -- Vera Menchick, the Polgar sisters.

  4. I like to play and know a lot of other girls who play as well

  5. As an ex-organizer I can say girls yes, women no.

My theory (actually just a hypothesis) is the girls do not want to show up the boys after puberty.

  6. Yes, some women are.  My own preference is to play chess variations, since I like to explore relatively unexplored territory when it comes to games.

A good background in chess is an enormous help when learning and playing other strategy games.

  7. I don't, but keep meaning to add it.  I love math, and am a great Reversi player.  I really should learn the strategies of Chess and of Go.  I know the rules to both, but not really how to play.

There is just so much I want to learn, and not that much time to devote to them!

  8. I just recently played in a tournament (I didn't play against her, though)where a woman was coming up on expert level chess play. Some girls are very into it, but it's definitely a game with more male players.

  9. I'm not but some are

  10. I know I'm not, for one because it's boring, and for two, because it is really hard.

  11. What kind of question is that??? Think men are the only chess players in the world??? If you do; then wake up and smell the coffee because women play chess and even better than most men. A study somewhere said that girls are more interested in chess than boys.

When we think of famous women chess players we immediately think of trailblazers Vera Menchik of Russia or Judit Polgar of Hungary. Famous women chess players from around the globe:

    Akhmilovskaya, Elena - Russia (1957)

    Alexandria, Nana - Georgia (1949)

    Bikova, Elizaveta - Russia (1913)

    Chiburdanidze, Maia - Georgia (1961)

    Galliamova, Alisa - Russia (1972)

    Gaprindashvili, Nona - Georgia (1941)

    Graf-Stevenson, Sonja - Germany/USA (1914)

    Ioseliani, Nana - Georgia (1962)

    Kosteniuk, Alexandra - Russia (1984)

    Kushnir, Alla Russia - (1941)

    Levitina, Irina - Russia (1954)

    Menchik, Vera - Russia (1906)

    Polgar, Judit - Hungary (1976)

    Qin Kanying - China (1974)

    Rubtsova, Olga - Russia (1909)

    Rudenko, Liudmila - Russia (1904)

    Xie Jun - China (1970)

    Zhu Chen - China (1976)

    Zvorikina, Kira - Russia (1919)

  12. I really like chess, but never really get the chance to play.  I used to be really good at it, but have lost a lot of my knack for the game.  It's good fun, and for those who think it is boring, think outside the box a little...  it can be made energetic and exciting with the right company :)

  13. I have always wanted to learn how to play, and i have taught myself the basics this past two weeks and am enjoying playing online against bots and other novices, I said i wanted to learn last year!! Ive left it late in the day but ive managed to do it this year!

  14. Yes I don't play personally but I have female friends that play chess.
