If so, would this forum be more suitably named "Gender Studies"?

If so, about how many years do you think it would take YA to make this name change?

a) 5

b) 25

c) 125

d) 625,000

  1. 1.  Yes.

    2.  Yes, however there are whole programs out there that offer degrees in women's studies, so perhaps that was their intent.

    3.  I have no idea.

  2. Yes, I've always wondered why Yahoo called this forum "Gender & Women's Studies", doesn't make sense does it.

Is it one of them there 'constructs' the feminist keeps going on about?

  3. Idiocy: (noun)

1.Utterly senseless or foolish behavior; a stupid or foolish act, statement, etc.

2.Psychology, the state of being an idiot.

You're two for two! Have a cookie.

  4. They've already changed the name. A year ago, I think (it used to be "Women's Studies"). So, maybe another year?

But actually, the name refers to the academic disciplines "Women's Studies" and "Gender Studies," it's not a reference to separate genders.

It seems like you've been around here long enough to know this....

  5. You have two separate question, one having nothing to do with the other.  Women are a gender and this should be called "Gender Studies"

The time if would take for Yahoo to change it would be greater than "d" since they are too busy changing things the do not need to be changed to deal with anything practical.

  6. Oh. I thought you were asking your top-level question, and was going to answer the linguistic question (that gender is a grammatical term that's recently to co-opted to avoid the ambiguity of 's*x' which refers both to the act and relatd matters, and to which type of person a person is -- as they used to say "Words have gender; people have s*x.").

Yes, women are one of the two main genders (well, female is, including babies and children).

Originally, this section was simply Women's Studies. In response to numerous complaints, they changed it to this. I doubt they're interested in changing it again. The current title is best understood as "Women's Studies, & Gender Studies" -- which are two distinct, if overlapping fields.

    I think.

  7. Gender is a self-defined identity construct.

  8. women's studies is a little different from gender studies. Women's studies mainly deal with the Feminism and Women rights in historical and social perspective. If the YA meant to indicate one same subject in both Gender studies and Women's studies, they wouldn't differentiate the two with distinctive names, but they'd put only one of them in the category title.

  9. Well, couldn't everything we know be put under 'human studies'?  Would be a pretty big section though.  I guess this is why they have narrowed it down into women's studies and gender studies, which are two academic disciplines.  I see no reason why there shouldn't be men's studies courses, but as of yet, there aren't many.  I don't think women's studies should be collapsed into gender studies because they're two separate fields of concern  :-)
