great great grandparent 100% or 10/10

great grandparent- 50% or 5/10

grandparent- 25% or 1/4th

parent- 1/8th

child- 1/16th

If your 2nd great-grandparent were full-blood Native American, you would be 1/16:

GG-grandparent=full

Great-grandparent =1/2

Grandparent =1/4

Parent = 1/8

You = 1/16

Your ancestry comes from all ancestors.  For example.. your father is 1/2 something and 1/2 something else.   Your mother may be 1/2 something and 1/2 something.

YOU are then 1/4 of each of those that your parents carry.

You have 16 gr gr grandparents, and that translates to you being 1/16 th of each of them.  To arrive at 3/16th (to you), then 3 of those 16 would be the same thing.. ie  3 gr gr grandparents from Ireland, or wherever.  

Of course, the irony comes in when none of the 16 gr gr grandparents are "full" anything.. since THEIR parents will not always be exactly one or the other.  

After researching a while.. you give up on the fractions, and just mention "I have an ancestor who came from France", and leave it at that.

Well, let's see... couldn't resist writing this out...

You have 4 grandparents, then each of those has 2 parents, so that gives you 8 great grandparents....each of those has 2 parents...that gives you 16 great great grandparents....one of you and 16 of them, so that gives you 1/16 of any nationality they have.

If THREE of your great grandparents were, yes. If only one of them was, you are just 1/16th.

You normally have 16 great grandparents. (If someone marries a cousin you have less, but you count the doubles twice.) You are 1/16th of whatever they were. If two of then were Cherokee or Chinese or Zulu, or anything else, you add, for 1/8th. If four of them were Albanian or Brazilian or Canadian, again, you add up. 4/16 = 1/4.
