I came to the US almost 30 years ago. I became American citizen and graduated with a MA degree with honor . I have no problem adjusting to this society but somehow I still prefer to identify myself as Vietnamese rather than Vietnamese American. I know some people do not have any problem identify as such but to me I never see myself as American.
I love Vietnam. I love so many things of being Vietnamese. I love our culture. I love the fact that we have a solid family foundation where young people respect the elderly and family has levels between older sisters, brothers and younger siblings. Something that you don't find in this country. I love Vietnamese music because it has meanings. I love the fact that Vietnamese men do not treat Vietnamese women like an object but the utmost respect because she is the mother of his children. When you speak with another Vietnamese person, whether you know the person or not, you always refer to them either bác, cô, chị, chú, anh, em etc..
