I am a teacher aide in a preschool, but lately I have been wanting to become a preschool teacher. Besides obtaining the number of required Early Childhood Education units, which I believe is like 12 to work as a teacher, is there another option to becoming certified? Are there any certification classes I can take?

  1. In my state, Michigan, legally the teachers only have to have 6 credits in early childhood.  Though, centers may have their own qualifications.  So it depends on each state too.  I have a bachelors degree in psychology with a minor in early childhood, and I work in the preschool 4's classroom of a child development center.  I am overqualified, but I love my job so that is what matters.  Check with state licensing to see what the qualifications are for your state... and you might consider taking a few classes at a community college.  Good luck
