  1. Try the flea market or wherever else they sell second hand stuff first so you can find something cheaper if anything. Second hand can be better in a way because there can be more of a selection since there could be older styles and colors and designs that might appeal to you better than what everyone has at their furniture stores. Good luck finding something!

  2. I like antiques.  Many years ago, I purchased a badly worn Victorian couch and chair.  The wood was damaged, the upholstery shredded, but I bought it.

It took me two years (I had a baby during that time) but I restored the wood, and upholstered the two pieces in a beautiful silk embroidered satin and velvet. The material cost as much as the two pieces, but it was worth it.  We had these pieces for 15 years, and sold them for a decent price.

If you are handy with wood and upholstering, go for the flea markets, second-hand shops, and private ads.

You can occasionally find some real buys at garage sales, too.  I acquired a chest of drawers with inlaid wood for $10.  Actually, I found a penny in one of the drawers, so it cost me $9.99.  I stripped and refinished it, added antiqued k***s (from Walmart) and it is a knockout!!

It is fun to find things and imagine what you can do with them, then make it happen!

  3. I'd rather find something slightly used or something like that.

For one, it's WAY cheaper. Another thing is, I don't like the modern look that most furniture has to it today. It's just isn't inviting to me. It's not something that says WELCOME.

Which to me is a very important thing

Most of todays furniture is hard and wears out quickly.

I'd go find something at the flea market or thrift store  way before new.

(But on the mattress i do agree on having it new over used.)

  4. I'm like Susan, anything involving upholstery I want NEW.  I love estate sale finds, but for pieces like bookcases, chest of drawers, etc.  These I can bring home and do my own cleaning magic on them!

  5. If it's an upholstered sofa, new.  Always new (or hand me downs from my family).  Because you never know what the previous owner did with or on that sofa.

  6. I'm 52 and never purchased a new sofa. I only bought a table and 4 chairs for the dining room.
