I'm thinking of going into special education. My current job is highly boring and it's important to me for my job to be meaningful. I already have a bachelor's degree.

  1. I'm not a teacher, but I work in the field. (Working on my way to be a teacher for a while on my way to in-home teaching). I work with kids with autism and while I don't know exactly what in-school TEACHERS do all day, I do currently work in a school as a teacher's assistant.

Depending on where you teach, there are varying degrees of maintainig programming for the children--the skills they need to work on, writing how to work these skills into their school day, and how they should be responding so that anyone who's working with them will have a consistent idea of what is expected of the child and waht is considered right or wrong behaviors.

Depending on the population you work with, there may also along with academic needs, be behavioral programs and needs. Perhaps that exhibit self-injurious behavior, or they aggress at others, or they simply stim a lot or are 12 and still not potty trained. Then as the lead teacher, it will be your responsibilty to either write programs to deal with these behaviors --make them lessen, potty train them, or give the child appropriate behaviors to replace bad ones--, or consult with others who work with them about their IEP and adding these things into their IEP, or going by what is written in their IEP's.

Again, I'm not a teacher, but I have been in the field for three years now, going on four. In a variety of settings and trainings. I love my job! A big part of it is also pinpointing the population and age range that you love working with--I LOVE people with autism, and have made this field my home :-)
