These questions are mainly for current or former non-Japanese residents of Japan and Japanese people who have lived or are currently living overseas.

Do you consider yourself to be a 三角食べ ("sankaku tabe") or a ばっかり食べ ("bakkari tabe") type of eater?

Have you found that your eating habits have changed since coming to Japan or since moving to another country? Has such a change been a positive or a negative?

For non-Japanese living (or those who have lived) in Japan:

Do you prefer the food culture of Japan to that of your home country?

For Japanese living (or those who have lived) overseas:

Do you prefer the food culture of your country of residence to those of Japan?

  1. I'm Japanese and lived in Italy for a year.  I love the food of both countries, but I do think eating in Japan offers more variety.  (I lived in the US too, but wasn't impressed by the food there.)

    When I was in school I was taught to practice 三角食べ, and it has stuck with me.  My European friends found it strange that I would eat a bit of starter, a bit of main dish, a bit of dessert, and went on while they finished the starter and then went to the main dish.
