I was home schooled through eighth grade. My mom sometimes left me use a calculator to do the math problems AFTER I a had figured out how to do them on paper. Now I am thinking of doing a highschool program online (Penn Foster) and was wondering if its allowed in highschool? Do you use calculators in class? Does it make a differance if its public or private shcool? I know its not allowed on tests.

If you think of any websites that might be helpful for a homeschooled person or have any other tips, please tell me. I have never attended public or private school.

Thanks!

  1. Some complex calculations require a calculator and the use of a calculator is a skill that needs to be learned.

Just as long as your mental calculations are sound calculators are good.

Most schools suggest that you get a scientific calculator for high school, but in some lessons you may be asked to keep it in your bag.

  2. Yes. I got in trouble a million times for NOT having one.

  3. u have to be allowed? Oops

  4. Actually, most pf the time it's required to have a Texas Instruments-83 or -84 calculator. This is because it's used for Geometry. But I go to a boarding school, I'm not sure about public schools, but it's probably the same. The graphing function on the calculator is needed for high school math. If you are taking geometry, get it. But if it's just algebra, you most likely will not need it.

  5. It depends on the type of math you'll be doing -- and the teacher too. Sometimes they might require mental math or pen and paper on certain things to make sure you understand the concepts, but for the most part my teachers allowed graphing calculators for the better half of the course. Even on quite a few tests.

I was in the public school system up until my sophomore year in high school, before transferring to online courses (with Richard McKenna), and in both high schools calculators were allowed.

Though it was still always required that you show your work.

  6. We are always allowed to use calculators, even on tests. It is a little difficult to do functions and other math problems without a graph.

But it all depends on the teacher and their rules. Sometimes there are certain times you aren't allowed to use a calculator.

  7. we are allowed but its good to have a full understanding of the equation before you use it
