just the same as photography or video, you need permission of the teacher.  in certain cases if the teacher is unwilling, the principal can authorize it. use without permission can result in serious consequences.  technically this applies to all schools, but the rules are commonally ignored at college level campuses.

In California i think its OK, as long as the teacher is aware of the recording.
