According to http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/drivers/drivers_license/motorcycle.html

Class L is any motor driven cycle with less than 150 cc displacement.

Class M is any motorcycle with 150 cc or greater displacement.

So class L wouldn't even allow me to drive my 150cc scooter on the roads legally...

  1. Only for the scooter class I suspect, under 200 cc.

  2. Generally speaking you can use any two wheeled street legal vehicle for a road test if it can go the required speeds for the area of the test. The instructor may laugh at you though :-D

  3. For a class M license you'll need to be riding something with greater than 150cc.  If you ride something 150cc or smaller you'll get an L class.

  4. You can use a scooter, but it needs to be a larger displacement. You can use the 150cc scooter, but you'll wind up with an "L" class license, which is good for 150cc's and under.
