  1. you are but overhand is way better, more control with overhand too

  2. Yeah you can but overhand it def the way to go.

Here is where you can get some great videos about volleyball if you are interested

  3. Yes you are.  But most will encourage you to be familiar with and have tried to perfect the overhand serve by your sophmore year. Best of luck to you and your team.

  4. you are allowed to in the rule book, but most coaches require an overhand serve. For example I had to have my overhand serve by 7th grade - and i had only started playing in 6th grade. It was hard but I worked really hard and eventually got it. If you have enough determination and desire to get your overhand serve, then you will. Good luck! =]

  5. By rule you can serve underhand. If the coach has instructed players not to serve underhand that is their choice.

The jump serve is overrated...with tremendous speed and spin as it comes over the net it is easy to bump to the setter. You don't have to do much after you get behind it and take some of the velocity off with a soft pass to the setter.

I find the floater much more difficult to pass since it is moving more lateral (side to side). You have a greater chance to shank it right or left. I used to use a jump serve and then as I became older and smarter I realized that the way to go was learn how to serve a float.

The technique I use is to line up the air stem (where you put the needle in to fill it with air) towards me. I use a short toss so the ball doesn't spin and try to contact the ball right on the stem with an open hand. If you don't get any wrist action the ball will leave your hand with no spin at all. It will move erratically as it flies towards your opponents side of net. Its cool to see because when you do it right...you can read the label (Mikasa, Wilson, etc....) as it is in the air.

  6. yes you are allowed but probably won't make a team and probably won't win much

  7. Yes you are, but nobody makes the team at my highschool if they can't overhand serve.

  8. of course your aloud. But it's better if you know how to do an overhand serve because it comes at you harder

  9. Yes, actually it's the other way around.

You are not allowed to do under hand serves (in my high school anyway).

Over hand serves and jump serves are encouraged to be used in high school varsity.

Overhand/Jump serves can actually get Ace points, under hand serves usually just start the volley (underhand are easier to pass back).

  10. Yes you can....most people do over because it is a stronger hit...but under hand you can be sure the ball will go over bc you hit it up!

  11. i depends on your school. but underhand serving is considered begginer. you can only make a good vball team if you can overhead serve. underhand serving is too soft, and easy to return

  12. yes you are but most high school coachs want you to over hand serve or jump serve

  13. yes..i believe you are allowed to.......usually by varsity they incourage overhand though...........

dont think that because you have an underhand serve doesnt mean it cant be powerful...in grade 8 i was known for my underhand serve, which i might add NO ONE on any other team in the division, or tournaments we went to could get a nice pass to their setter off of it............so dont think under hand serves are weak..if you work hard you can become very good at it( but i would recommend working and practicing ur ooverhand)

  14. you are allowed, but it is easy for the opponents to return an underhand serve.

  15. The rules say that you are allowed to use an underhand serve.  The rules say that as long as their is a visible toss and you hit it with a hand or arm, it is legal.

However, most high school coaches will not allow you to use an underhand serve.

PS Not all underhand serves are lollipop serves.  A good hard underhand floater will still earn aces.  And not all overhand serves are good serves.  Just because someone serves overhand, it is not make it hard to return.
