Question:

Are you aware crib bumpers are bad?

There are many warnings out there about crib bumpers not being safe. They prevent proper air flow and contribute to SID. I bought the breathable bumpers for my baby to be. My family and friends think I'm being ridiculous. My friends get kinda insulted and snap out, well my kid was just fine with them. Like I'm attacking their parenting or something. My mom even bought the regular one's for the crib at her house not listening to me at all. She says if the baby is not rolling into them he's fine. Which isn't what the research is stating. Why don't people just respect my wishes?

  1. i am not going to use them and have asked my mom and m-i-l to leave them off of their cribs as well.  in the end it saves everyone money and my piece of mind!  i'm sure that many people have had no trouble with CB's, but there is a risk that my dd could be harmed/killed by them, and i am not willing to take that risk just so that the crib looks "cute", nor am i willing to allow anyone caring for my dd to take it.  ultimately, it is my dh's and my decision and i have asked the grandparents to respect it if they want sleepovers with our dh.  (luckily, our parents are really flexible and considerate of our first-time-parent anxieties and didn't use CB's with us, so don't really care)

Guest5272, telling someone to "relax a bit" is unhelpful.  Many newborn babies have rolled over into CB's and suffocated.  Your 4 children were lucky.  See these articles from the NY Times and Consumer Reports (from 2007!!) that clearly state that crib bumpers are not considered safe:
