I'd like you all to take a moment to visit the rare breeds conservancy website.

http://albc-usa.org/cpl/wtchlist.html

This is the watchlist for the domestic animal breeds that are now considered endangered and you'll be surprised what's on there! Two of my favorite horse breeds are about to go away for good. This is a great organization, thanks for taking the time to check it out.

What is your reaction to what's listed here?

  1. I've been aware of the Cleveland Bay's rarity for decades and remember seeing a picture of one on the inside of the book cover from a Margarite Henry book called "All About Horses" as a kid in the 1960's.  I remember thinking how much the front end looked like my first horse (Who's breeding we were NEVER sure of, but she sure trotted a LOT faster than she ran and would pull anything you hooked her up to.).

  2. HOLY COW!!!! i didnt know that so many draft horses were endangered!!that sux!!!!wow thank yu for this!!!it really made m,e thankful for having a throughbred!

  3. I'm not familiar with a lot of the horse breeds but I did notice fainting goats (of whom I own several) are on the critical list.

  4. I was very aware that these breeds were endangered, and was not surprised to see them on the list. The over-breeding of thoroughbreds and quarter-horses has limited the growth and conservation of some of these breeds, such as clydesdales. (by over-breeding I am talking about the horses that are owned and bred by people who cannot take care of horses, or choose to abuse them. This is becoming a huge issue in the horse industry.)
