  1. i believe that it's a topic that's still up for debate. in my personal opinion, people are genetically predisposed to the disease. however, i also feel that a large amount of stress and perhaps a nervous breakdown can trigger it to emerge in a person. many people have loads and loads of stress on them and do not develop bipolar, so it has to be in the genes as well.

  2. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives.

About 5.7 million American adults or about 2.6 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year,1 have bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person’s life.

The classic form of the illness, which involves recurrent episodes of mania and depression, is called bipolar I disorder. Some people, however, never develop severe mania but instead experience milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with depression; this form of the illness is called bipolar II disorder. When four or more episodes of illness occur within a 12-month period, a person is said to have rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. Some people experience multiple episodes within a single week, or even within a single day. Rapid cycling tends to develop later in the course of illness and is more common among women than among men.

  3. It can be genetic but I don't think you can make someone else bipolar too, being bipolar isn't like having the flu lol!

    =•]

  4. You are born bipolar. Anything else that is caused by stress isn't the bipolar disorder.

  5. both but if you are born with the pedisposition to it you obviously woulld be more apt to end up with it as with anything the environmental conditioning is a very key factor in this

  6. I don't think it's genetic at all.

it's confusing because many "bipolar" people grew up in alcoholic or abuse situations - so sometimes it might appear genetic because grandfather beats father beats son and on and on.    It's because of the stress - and that's the main reason - it has to do with the person's adrenals..

  7. you are born with it

    its also hereditary

but a lot of people who claim to be bi-polar really are not

  8. Many wont like this answer...

the Term Bi-Polar is used when you have enough money to get a Dr to diagnose you with being a selfish pain in the *ss.  Calling oneself bipolar gives one the right to be a total jerk, and have a lable for it, instead of just calling it what it is, either youre just pissed at that moment, or youre spoiled and want it exactly your way...

my sister in law is supposedly bi polar..if you ask me, shes just spoiled rotten by everyone, and everyone is too wussy to tell her to kiss off..  give me a break, shes the baby of the family, shes soo used to everything being done for her...shes 43 now, and still like a little kid.. .its just kinda ridiculous..stop it with the bipolar c**p, the add, adhd, etc...call it Bit*hy, and for the supposedly ADD kids...let them run around and play alittle bit and get the energy out the old fashioned way..

  9. I agree with some of the other posters, I think you have a predisposition to it and some factors in your life can trigger it.
