Question:

Are you eligible for unemployment benefits if you were in the hospital?

My husband was laid off all this week from work (he is due to return to work this coming Monday). Last Friday (before the lay off started), my husband ended up in the emergency room with an acute kidney issue. He was not released from the hospital until Thursday of this week. Can we still file for unemployment benefits for this week (even though he was in the hospital until Thursday)? We live in Michigan.

He has a short term disability plan through work. If we can't file for unemployment, can we file a claim through the disability plan (even though he was laid off this week)?

Thanks.

  1. He wasn't fired, he was on a lay off and was due to return to work, so unemployment makes no sense.  His health plan from work should cover this...call them.

  2. If you are laid off unemployment is very easy to get. So yes.

Type in google, your states name and the word unemployment.

My state, Ohio, even lets you file online so you never have to talk to anyone.

  3. To be eligible for unemployment benefits a person has to be employable and looking for work. Being in the hospital pretty much negates his eligibility for unemployment benefits, or else he may be eligible for a pro-rated amount. Short term disability benefits? Good luck. My short term disability doesn't kick in until after three months of not being able to work due to a disability. He may want to check the conditions of his coverage.
