I'm thinking about buying a set of his commentaries, and I'm looking for some feedback. Thanks.

  1. Having checked into a similar subject, I've found the only real source of any actionable information is a studious pastor.

Suggest K&D as well as JFB, both available freely on eSword alongside Strong's, Matthew Henry, Clarke, Barnes, and other helpful business.  Oh yeah, Wesley and Darby too...

  2. You should always approach with caution any writer who publishes a commentary consisting of his own study which cover the entire Bible.  No one can be an expert on every single book.  The great scholars specialize, i.e. focusing their study on Mosaic Literature and becoming an expert on that (but no so much on Prophetic Literature, perhaps).  It is generally better to find the best scholars on a particular book or writer in the Bible and buy them rather than buying what can only be a survey, even if a very good survey, given the depths of YHWH's Word.

Viewbooks are an excellent resource.  Gateways to Torah, for example, compiles all the great scholars on Moses into one work, giving a variety of interpretational views on his works.  These types of resources generally have titles like "Five views on..." and have the top scholars from each of the views give their commentary, then allow the top scholars from all the other viable views respond to that commentary.
