I feel I am in a rut. I have a job in a career I worked hard to get - 5 years at university and a masters degree. Now after 10 years in my job I feel uninterested in it and at times overwhelmed by my workload - then I panic and cant get anything done properly. I end up taking work home to meet deadlines and then cant sleep with worry but I know a lot of the time I waste time cos I'm not interested in writing the report. Is it just me or are there any of you out there who just feel the same? I think I would like a job where I dont have to think as much - like a cleaner or van driver - oh and before you all go mad, I am not saying you dont thave to think in those jobs I am saying you dont have to think as much or write big long serious reports ! What job would like to do instead of the one you are currently doing?

  1. Sounds like you might need a job change.  I've been at my job for 11 years, and have also gotten frustrated with a few things at work over the years (bad managers in particular).  But I like my company, so I tend to change roles internally and persevere.

If you are no longer interested in the nature of your work, are there any other roles internally that have a more suitable sort of work that you can look to move into?

I'm sure you've built up a reputation, have good benefits, etc. from all of your work experience, so definitely check into whether you can make something work.

Or maybe there is a related type of work that you can get into that is less demanding?  Perhaps at a competitor, or in a government role, or a consulting role, etc.

Or maybe you just need a short leave of absence to travel or try something new to recharge.  One of my colleagues took time off from a finance job to become a certified yoga instructor, and then ultimately came back to finance full time.

That's the best advice I can offer without knowing more.  Good luck!!!
