Practically speaking the only good thing about SUVs was they were good to haul kids around in when I was a speech/debate coach. My team was small and we took a Ford Excursion to the meets around the state of Wyoming. Yes, it ate up the gas but the school was paying for it so I wasn't worried. I certainly wouldn't have ever owned one. Even when the gas was down to $2 a gallon it cost a fortune to fill up. Around here I see Escalades, Excursions, Explorers driving around and it seems like they are a status symbol for some people. It gives them opportunity to literally 'look down' on you while you're driving your smaller, less cool car. I see Hummers (that were meant to be offroad vehicles) driving around spotless. They've probably never seen a dirt road even. I used to drive a HMMV (military nomanclature for the civilian HUMMER) and I thought they sucked. I don't know that anyone who was in the military would ever want one. I certainly never did. I'll stick to my minivan.

  1. Yep, gotta love them minivans,  heck mine can't even get to 100 mph......I tried the other day.    haha

Oh I wish I had my 76 Charger again.

Back when gas was 32 cents a gallon I had a Pinto.  Now that was some cheap traveling.

Ok, that SUV is good for pulling a trailer.

  2. I agree completely. Most people who own SUVs don't need them. They could have a vehicle with the same space if they got a wagon and if they needed more space then a minivan would be better than an SUV. Like you said they want the status symbol and want to "ride high" because it makes them feel safe. Even though they have a much higher risk of rolling over and killing themselves in an accident.
