Are you permitted to bring a backpack to class in public high school in the United States?

My husband is working on his graphic novel, and he has characters that are in high school, and he wants to know if people can carry backpacks to class. I graduated in '96 and don't remember if we were permitted to bring backpacks to class or not, and he never went to public school. Anyone know? How is it at your school today? Thanks!

It depends on the school and depends on the kid.  Most kids I know carry a bag because they are disorganized and carry too much stuff with them, or it's the last class of the day and they want to skip out early.

As for permission to carry them to class, it depends on the school and how much room there are in classrooms.  A lot of classrooms and desks pack kids in like cattle and there really isn't room to bring bags, so most kids don't.  And teachers may request that they don't. The more rural this school is, the more likely carrying a bag around is not an issue.  If we are talking about a city kid, there is a definite possibility that some classrooms will not allow bags in the classroom because of security risks.  Teachers want to see what their students are "packing".

yes your allowed to bring backpacks but some teacher would prefer if you left it in your locker because they feel it takes up too much space. only some do that though, generally it's okay.

Haven't been in school for a long time but, yes they can and do. I have not been able to figure out why when you think about the ease of bringing in  all kinds of things in the back pack.

not anymore.  Ever since Colombine has been immortallized and terrorist attacks have sealed the deal, backpacks are only allowed in your locker.

nowadays i've seen a lot of girls use tote bags and canvas bags instead of actual backpacks

depends on the school some schools allow it others, like mine, dont. i have no idea. my school hasnt allowed it in 4 or 5 years. kids left them in the aisles and people would trip. a lot of schools do allow it.

It depends on the school. In my school we have to leave our bookbags in our lockers.

As far as I can remember, we were not only allowed to bring them in, but scolded for NOT having a backpack. Most schools aren'ttprivilegedd enough or do not permit school lockers for security purposes. So if it is in a small town that the novel takes place in, I say opt for lockers, if in Los Angeles, BACKPACKS! :)

In some schools you can, in others you can't. Generally, urban schools do not allow backpacks; rural and suburban schools do. I teach at a suburban high school, and students are allowed to bring backpacks into classrooms.
