  1. Being prepared should be a normal part of living.  You shouldn't have to wait for signs of deteriorating economy before you start preparing.  The first thing to do is to get out of debt.  Anytime you have debt, somebody owns a piece of you, so that, when hard times come, they can pull your strings.  Get out of debt and you are free to do as you choose with what money you have.  And you are insulated from rising interest rates.

Next is to have a goodly amount in savings to last you 6 months to a year or more without a job.  Said savings will last longer if you don't have to use it to pay debt with.

Then lastly, practice provident living - learn to live without electricity for example.  Or learn how to preserve water.  Learn how to grow crops.  Or have storage of food/medicine/necessities handy that you can live on if the groceries close (i.e., in times of hurricanes or other disasters).

    That's it.
