Are you ready for Ramadan?

This is my first ramadan and I am only 16 years old. I converted a month back. My mom doesn't want me to call the sisters that I met at the mosque. I like talking to them because I am new to Islam. What do you do during ramadan besides not eat, pray, and gather? I don't know what to do. I am the only muslim in my family. Also, I am having a labor day picnic with my family a day before Ramadan...do I wear my scarf over my family's house because sometimes there are people I don't know. What to do? DO I wear it while we travel over there and do I keep it on during that time!!

  1. Congratulations and welcome dear sister.

Well, the Qur'an specifies the people in front of whom you don't need to wear the scarf:

024.031 And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of s*x; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.

    Al-Qur'an, 024.031 (An-Noor [The Light])

If you know that there is anyone outside of those people mentioned in the verse, then you need to observe the Hijab.

    Allah knows best.

  2. Masha'allah! welcome to the religion of peace! may allah help you on your first ramadan. indeed, it may be difficult as days are MUCH longer this time round, but you will get great rewards from allah.

In ramadan it's all about worshiping and doing good deeds..so just try your best to pray and read quran, and everything else to please Allah.

Ya..your gonna have to wear the scarf in front of everyone other than your brother, father, grandfather, uncle, also you do have to wear it in front of your guy cousins who have reached the age of puberty..
