  1. The only reason I think it's messed up because they are discontinuing this sport saying the U.S. has no competition. This just proves that they are wrong.

  2. a little bit

they were finally knocked off the top in what may be the last olympics for softball

  3. Yeah, they had a tremendous run, blowing everybody away.  Shocker that they lost.  It seems a bit unfair that they beat Japan twice, while Japan only beats them once and yet get the gold.  But, rules are rules as strange as they may seem.

With that said, I give lots of credit to Japan, particularly the pitcher.

To have those dominant performances against a powerhouse like the U.S. TWICE in TWO days (and one of the games for NINE innings) is just incredible.

I would like to have seen them play one more for a final FINAL match.  But I suppose it would be too much to ask for Japan's only ace to pitch 3 games.  Oh well.  Congrats to Japan.  Remarkable job.

  4. My heart goes out to them.  This could be the last Olympics to have softball for ever or a very long time like other have said.  They dominated so much they just go use to it.  So, it is disappointing.

I didn't know Japan lost twice to the US before... that blows.

However, it might be a good thing.  If we would of won it like we usually do, then Softball probably be banned for good.  So, it might come back someday?

Another thing about dropping softball/baseball, maybe we should drop table tennis, because China has dominated in that for a long while.

  5. Heck no.  You give it your all and let the chips fall where they may.  As long as you give your best effort, there shouldn't be any regrets.

  6. hahahahahah bad luck bad luck

  7. Not really, they left the bases loaded twice.  Japan played better.

  8. A little sad for them, but like you said they had a great run. Besides they didn't have some horrible game in the end. I mean yeah if they had done that good and then lost 10-0 or something then I'd feel bad for them.

  9. Disappointed yes, sad no.

  10. Not really. They should be happy that they got to go to the Olympics. Softball should not be an Olympic sport as very few countries play the sport seriously. (Softball is not in the London 2012 Olympics).

  11. I'm sad for the US team because they want it so much but more because they will never get another Olympic gold medal in softball because noone will.

Congrats to Japan for beating the US when it counted most, but I don't understand why they use such a weird system in the elimination round.

Normally we see after pool play, that the 1st and 4th rank team face off and the 2nd and 3rd rank team face off.  Winners of those face off in the gold/silver match.  Losers face off in the bronze medal match.

This system pins the 1-2 against each other and 3-4 against each other in sort of a semi-double elimination.  Loser of 1-2 faces winner of 3-4.  Loser of that match gets bronze, and winner gets to face winner of 1-2 for gold/silver.  I guess this gives 3-4 a chance to win gold.  I would think that since the US had already beaten Japan, then once Japan beat the US, in true play-back formats of double elimination, they each have 1 lose.  So then another game would be played to determine the winner.  The US's only loss was in the final game where Japan had 2 loses both to the US.   I'm looking through the elimination brackets for other sports and still haven't found anything similar.

Congrats again to all the ladies for some great softball. Congrats to Japan for being the last and I reigning champion of Olympic softball forever.  That's in a way is a cool title.

  12. Yea im sad . i feel so bad, they have worked so hard for this gold medal. It looked like they thought they were gonna win from the beginning so they werent trying. leaving the bases loaded 2 times . even though i dont like japan they looked like they wanted it more. the diving plays. bustos left in a good fashion . hitting a homer in her last international game. the others that are done with international play is Kelly kretschman, lovie jung, tairia flowers, and laura berg. yukiko ueno pitched like 400 pitches or something like that in 2 days, thats really good

  13. what pisses me off is japan got to play twice after losing to usa and we lose one and lose it all.seems a bit unfair.should have been best 2 out of 3 maybe.

  14. NO

The only way I'd be upset is if I bet on them.

Since I don't gamble I am NOT upset.

I still got to get up and go to work the next day.

  15. not at all

  16. Maybe the softball team lost but look at all American winners we had. Beach volleyball kicked tail. The American swimmers won. That little Johnson girl won on the balance beam. We won a lot of medals and we don't have a thing to be ashamed of. America still has a slew of top atheletes and we are getting more by the minute. Go U.S.A.

  17. Nope!

  18. Not really. They played a fantastic series and came up short. Japan deserved to win.

Congrats to both of them for a well played game.

  19. A usa and australia gold medal match would have been a cracker. maybe next time.

    there is always the basketball

  20. I'm only 'sad' for them in the sense that it's their last Olympics, since softball and baseball won't be events in 2012. The IOC got rid of it because of America's dominance in the sport. In that regard, I'm not all that crushed that our team lost to the Japanese, since it puts a little egg on the faces of the IOC members who killed softball. (baseball was only thrown out to keep things 'even'.) And I agree with SoBayGuy, that Japan should have had to beat the US twice to win the gold.
