I don't know about you but I'm really over the chestnuts and bays in the show ring. Its like chestnut, chestnut, bay, chestnut, bay, bay, PALOMINO, chestnut! Greys are also becomming quite common as well though.

I know its quality over the colour of the horse but we should start training the coloured horses as well! I'm not trying to be mean to people who own chestnuts and bays (we even own one) but I would like to see some variety in the show ring. Opinions?

Also, what colour are your horses?

Mine are- Red roan

-Bay

-Cremello.

    chestnut

    chestnut

    Dark Bay

    Bright Bay

    Bay

    Grey Roan

    Rose Grey

    Flea Bitten Grey

  2. i totally understand what u mean. all i ever see is bays and chesnuts. i mena i like the color but i dont want to see it every time i go to a show. well im happy my horse is black.

  3. Chestnuts & Bays appear more uniform. So depending on what you're showing on, judges tend to lean towards a more uniform look.  It just looks cleaner.

Plus white horses are freakin' hard to keep clean enough for the show ring!

Responsible breeding is also a factor.

  4. I guess I never pay attention to the color in the ring.. I am looking at the scopyness and talent of the horses and placing my favorites against the judges.

But if you really want to shake it up, add some mules into the classes ;)

  5. Certain breeds have high percentages of certain colors.  Such as Tennessee Walking Horses - 80% are black.

Most responsible breeders breed for conformation and quality rather than color.

I have a black TWH and a brown/white pinto colored TWH

  6. I can see your point...but amazingly Ive seen a lot of variety in what someone would call "chestnut" or bay. My mare is a deep liver chestnut, her filly is a very orangey bright chestnut. Or add in a little white, like my mares thick blaze and socks, and its a great contrast. I do love variety though. My other horses are buckskin, dun, red dun tobiano, dappled silver buckskin, bay overo. If I ever breed my mare again Ill breed her to a cremello so Ill hopefully get a smokey black or palomino...or another buckskin(which used to catch my eye but are nearly as common as chestnuts now)

  7. I personally love Chestnut horses and Appaloosas of any color.

  8. Honestly, its not that way for me atleast where im from there a bunch of different variatys of colors in teh ring. of course chestnuts and bays are the most common though there is always like 4-6 different colors in teh show ring.

    Paint

    Sorrel

  9. think about this for a minute...

what are the most popular horses -  quarter horses and thourobreds (or a mix with 1/4 or thouro in them)

what is the most popular color for a quarter horse - bay, thourobred- chestnut. there ya go. but i do get one you mean. I like my stable. we have all different horses.

here are some of the school horses

    chime - black bay

    cooper(mine) grey

    checkers - fleabitten grey

    ace-grey/dapple

    nevada - dun

    little beau - bay

    sammy and lacy - palimino

    star - paint

    spirit - bay

    romeo - grulla/paint

    chacha- bay

we have a lot of diff horse colors, but a lot of the pwned oned are chestnut or bay. it is just like people. most people have brown hair and brown eyes those genes are just the most dominate. hope  this helps!!!!

  10. Well I do understand where you are coming from however, I don't seem to be bothered by it. I own two chestnuts myself. But the fun part is one is a red chestnut and one is a more brown chestnut. Like actually my TB is the red chestnut, and her dam and sire are both Bay, she's from racing stock, and then my QH had a buckskin dam and a chestnut sire, and his full sister is a buckskin. So I really don't know what you want me to say. It is just like people! My entire family has a form of brown hair, and then I got blonde hair. So like the majority of people have either black or brown hair, then blonde, then redheads are the least common. So it would be like trying to complain that there are not enough redheaded athletes.

I think that any performance horse should be based on the performance at the shows and not the color. Just some colors are more recessive, thats just genetics.

  11. I personally like basic black, but I have a real weakness for roans.  I'm used to QH and Paints, so am used to a variety of colors.  Truthfully there is no bad color as far as I'm concerned, it's the horse not the color that I worry about.  I want good conformation and a willing attitude, then color is just a bonus.

I personally have a black and white pinto TWH/Saddlebred and a smoky buckskin.

  12. A good horse is never a bad colour!! (Or so an old farmer told me)

    :-)

I stand out a bit with a fleabitten grey with black legs, he's pretty :-) lol

My chestnut stands out a bit because he shines more than most. Also he's fast against the clock and he's a cheeky little swine so most of the people on my "local" showjumping circuit know him :-P

  13. Yeah, I agree. I used to share a coloured(unusual, yes!)  Thoroughbred x hunter type who was successful in the show ring, and really stood out in between all the dark coloured horses. It's the same in the Dressage rings, where he was looked down on because he wasn't the same as the other 'perfect horses'.

My current horse is a Palomino Welsh x TB. x

  14. OMG good question i am SO sick of chestnuts and bays

Of all the 3 horses i have owned they were ALL chestnut.

2 of my friends have a bay and another friends has a chestnut.

but thankfully my mum has a big old grey horse.

there ar e also too many horses with blazes what happened to the good old all over black horse they are so gorgous. Or even i want to see some all four long socks have not seen them for a while

BEWARE: if u dont like Brown horses dont go to stock horse shows lol

    i want to see more:

    Palomino

    strawberry roan

    buckskin♥

    black even

    Appaloosas

    Paints

    cremello

even albino horses for a change

    Duns

    dark greys

    greys

Come on, not even some dapples, or a different shade of BROWN

  15. arabians and rocky's are nice!

  16. the first answer is right. certain breeds only come in certain colors or a high percentage of a certain color. generally the stronger bloodlines in ANY breed are solid colors like bay, black, and chesnut. this is ESPECIALLY true for walking horses, saddlebreds, arabians. thoroughbreds, morgans, and most warmblood breeds. judges actually look down on spotted and non-traditional colors because they show evidence of cross breeding in early lines (for example, the tennessee walker didnt come in spotted/paint variety until they were outcrossed with american paints). palomino and dilutes were not recognized for registry in the andalusion breed until just recently and could not be shown in breed shows, even though they were purebred. a pinto saddlebred will NEVER beat a solid bay or chesnut if they have similar movement. most higher level judges value tradition, not flash.

my personal horses are bay and chesnut roan

  17. It cant really be helped, in different classes there will be different breeds.

most showing classes have horses that are part TB, because they make good show horses and its so hard to breed a coloured TB.

It would be nice to see a difference but I suppose in the higher showing clases most people wont change from TB's as they think the judge will look for them

  18. I used to say that Sorrels or Chestnuts were too common also.  I am a Buckskin/ Dun person.  They are becoming popular now.  My hubbie's horse is a typical sorrel.  We also have a nice Thoroughbred Bay mare that I traded to retire my Buckskin mare.

There seems to be so many "new" colors out there.  The grullas are so awesome . I recently saw mouse like color with flaxen mane on a Rocky mountain horse, I think.  Wow it was something.  Striking.

I just love all different varieties.  And the thing is even the sorrels come in different shapes and variations.  Some have lighter mane while others mane matches their coat.  The worst thing to me is to have an ugly horse....you've seen them ..that is sorrel.  Poor horse has nothing going for it.  Well except that it is a horse.  And sometimes that is all they need.

  19. yeah i like to see different colored horses out there, its like everyone has a uniformed horse in the show ring

but i love greys so i would like to see a lot more of them, they are soo beautiful

    my horses are

    Flea Bitten Grey

    Black

    Black Bay

    Red Dun Paint

  20. i know what you mean but chestnuts and bays are very common there are many of them so its only natural for there to be many chestnuts and bays in the show ring you can only use what you've got and so when you've got bays or chestnuts that what you use besides the color of the horse is not always important it all depends on the horses temper and personality and how they move like the old saying goes when life gives you lemons make lemonade hope that helps. i own a dapple grey QH mare and an appaloosa mare :]

  21. Bay and chestnut are the two most common thoroughbred colors.

  22. Actually, if they smell like horses, I like their color.  Mine are grey and paint.

  23. I like chestnuts but I am definetely over the bays. I have 2 arabians, both grey and the mare had a buckskin foal.

  24. My colors are

    TWH/Light Bay

    TWH/Palomino

    RockyCross/Chocolate w Flaxen Mane/tail

    KMH/Chocolate dapple spotted w Flaxen Mane/Tail

I did the most stupid thing you could ever do about 5 years ago. I bought for color. It was a grulla mare TWH and she was loco. Never will I do it again. My horse is the bay and to me he is beautiful. Well trained and a great ride.

  25. I know how you feel but i am one of those that have just bays and chestnuts but they are not plain but i love the colour

TB Bay with 4 white socks

Aust pony Chestnut with white mane and tail

Haflinger Liver chestnut with white mane and tail with dorsal stripe

Arab liver chestnut with 4 white socks

Clydie/TB Bay with 4 white socks and a stripe
