Are you still using electricity when its still plugged up but turned off?

that is true. even though your applaince, cellphone, radio anything is turned off and still plugged in, there are still currents runnning through the wire and costing you on your electricity bill. many people think that it is bogus but it has been proven over many times. it is a good choice to always unplug something after use or when you arent using it. i saved 45 bucks just by going around and unplugging all my appliances in my house. i advise you to do the same. its more money to use on yourself and it saves the environment. it does that because you are using less electricity and helping out our ozone.  so.  i say that you should definately follow and unplug those suckers. =]

Usually appliances use very little when turned off, i.e. VCR clock. As for cellphone chargers and laptop charges they should be unplugged when not in use as they do still consume electiricity.

true, thats why power strips are good, bc when you tun them off they dont use electricity like normal plugs do.

I read somewhere that it still uses 40% of what it would if it was on.  Unplug it and it takes away any fire potential also or zapping if there was a lightning strike.

Well, true and false.  Depends on the appliance or equipment.  Many of todays electrical appliance are in what is called standby mode.  Televisions are the best example.  A TV in standby mode starts faster than one that was completely shut off.  Fact is about 20 percent of common households electrical use if from these standby mode things.

It depends on the appliance.  Just being plugged in doesn't complete a circuit.  If your coffee maker or mixer or lamp is simply sitting there plugged in, it doesn't use any electricity.  The issue is with appliances that stay in a "ready" mode via small transformers, either internal ones, or the external variety.  These are the "wall warts" - those heavy little black boxes that plug into the wall and transform AC power to DC power.  They stay warm, and warmth means power is being used.  If you have those (and most homes these days have dozens), then yes, they are sitting and slurping power to no purpose whatsoever.  TVs, VCRs, DVDs, TiVOs, and similar appliances that are "instant-on" capable do this as well.  Just about anything with a timer does this also, so even that digital coffee maker may have a trickle of power running through it just to keep the clock going.
