i have been chosen to be winger for my high school varsity rugby team. we did not have enough juniors so i was sent to the senior team. am i stuck to being a winger for my tenure in high school rugby? i have average muscles and and height. i am really interested playing a forward, like a hooker or something. but i am small compared to the seniors but i am average compared to other juniors. i am going to be in grade 10 next year, if there is going to be a junior team, could i just choose what position i play?

  1. It depends, if you can work out and gain muscles, you can basically change the way you play. If before you evaded tackles, after gaining muscle you can break through them. However your coach will most likely know what position is best for you to play and you should ask them about trying out different positions.

  2. No, you are never stuck.

However you also need to be realistic about your abilities and attributes. You can, to some extent, change your body shape, but to a large extent you are stuck with who you are.

Talk to other players and coaches about where you want to play and what you need to do or be to make a success in the position.

  3. that depends on how good you are most coaches start a player on the wing to see  how they play if you play well then you will get moved

  4. not really. i play rugby and i am a utility back- i play anywhere in the backs-. just ask your coach if you could have a go at a different position next game. dont give up your rugby its a great sport

  5. No way!!!! my position has been moved a lot!!! I used to primarily play hooker, for 3 years, actually but at the end of this year, my coach informed me I was better suited for open-side flanker. Now I can play both positions! You can play as many or few positions as you are good at, and having that variability can only help you. Best of luck!
