  1. Yes, because you play the game thinking the dealer has a 10 not showing. So if you have a 14 or 15 and they flip a face card on you, you would have had a better chance taking the next card.

  2. If you have a 3 card 16 vs a dealer 10 and one of the cards in your hand is a 4 or 5, you should stand. This play is valid with up to 6 decks. 14s and 15s are not statistically close enough to adjust your play without an accurate count of the cards. In a game with up to 6 decks you should also hit if you have a 2 and 10 in your hand (total of 12) vs a dealer 4.

There are a few other plays you can make based on the cards on the table without a complete count, but I don't remember them all. You can find them in the book "Blackbelt in Blackjack."

  3. If your playing 6 or 8 deck shoe then stick to basic strategy. If it's single deck and possibly double deck (the few small cards you hold in your hand actually change your odds of breaking on another hit) then you would probably hold on 15's and 16"s but still hit 14's. I had a book years ago that broke down all these plays. I can't remember exactly but I think at least 2 of the 3 cards in your hand have to be cards that you need to draw to make your hand otherwise you play it like a two card 14, 15, 16.
