Question:

Are you supposed to ice skate with your feet going outwards a bit?

I ice skate like that...I mean the blades are on their sides sort of. It's hard to explain..But after like 30 minutes on the ice, the left side of my left foot, and the right side of my right food get sore!

  1. No, you shouldn't skate like that! If you use rental skates that would explain (try to tie them tighter). If they are your own skates then tighten them to, or get smaller skates.


  2. Well rental skates are usually not very good to begin with. If your feet are sore after skating you should probably tie them tighter and make sure there is not too much wiggle room because that is when you start to skate to the side.

It sounds like the rental skates you're using are either not tied tightly to give you enough ankle support so that you can stand up straight or the skates are very broken down.  When you're skating, just forward straight line skating, you should be on the "flat" of your blade, meaning your ankles are straight up and your feet are not turned in at all.  When you're skating, are you feeling more pressure on the outsides of your feet or the insides?  If you're feet are leaning to either side when you're just skating forward, there's a problem...which is probably what is causing your pain.  Next time, try to tie your skates tighter, mostly in the ankle, but not so they're cutting off your circulation!  If you're still having problems, ask if you can exchange your pair for maybe a little newer pair or some that are a little more stiff in the ankle.  When you stand up, you should be able to stand flat footed, just like you would in street shoes.

  4. Rental skates are usually so old and worn down that the ankles have lost all support....it's like having a rag supporting your ankles LOL.  You could try to tie them tighter, but you can't expect too much quality from rental skates.

You should be skating more on the center of your blade, if your feet are turned this far outward this may be causing your pain in your feet since the outside of your feet are supporting most of your weight. If you are using rental skates they may not have enough support which is causing this so you could try to tighten them up more, and also make sure you have the right size of skate so they are not too large or too small.

  6. Ooo.. That most likely would be the boot's fault.

    Most rental boots are weak and 'wimpy'; they don't support your ankles at all. That's actually dangerous. Some people can support their feet themselves, but it sounds like you 'rely' on the boots a lot. Dont' worry though. That's actually the most common occurence. It's  a lot more rare to find someone who is really good at figure skating with rental boots.

    You just have to be careful. If the soreness gets any worse, you should stop. It's possible that you'll hurt the muscle there badly, or rub the skin there-even if you have socks on. (Irritated skin in my opinion is worse and really, really annoying.)
