Are you supposed to take both the sat and act? If not, how do you know which test you are supposed to take. I want to start studying this summer before my sophmore year. Also, what books would you reccomend?

  1. You don't have to but they do have different types of questions so most people do better on one of them than the other.

The math topics are a litle bit different.  You can check the topics of each and see where they differ.

I believe the Act does not have a writing portion and I believe the score is compiled by 1/2 math and 1/2 verbal.

  2. The ACT does have a writing portion, but it's optional if you want to take it.

I would take both tests just in case because it depends on what the school wants, whether it's private or public or both.  Sometimes they ask for ACT or SAT, just look into their requirements.

Right now I have the big, blue SAT book.  It's pretty good, especially on the math portion because it helps me review a lot of what was in the past and it has about 8 practice tests.
