  1. I have owned quite a few gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs over 19 years.

The guinea pigs all go in for yearly check ups or anytime I notice something "off".  They have had such issues as colds, eye infections, urinary tract infections, and bladder stones. Usually resulting in medication or even an x-ray to find the stones - all done by the vet.

The smaller animals were taken in anytime I noticed a behavior change - going off food/water, acting sleepy etc.

Even though rodents are small animals they still must be properly vetted.

  2. Only ferrets require vaccines. I do however bring my rats to the Vet for their yearly check up.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Other than Ferrets, most small animals do not require vaccinations.

They should have a vet, though. Basic health checks when first purchased, and then for any health problems you may encounter during the ownership period.

  4. if you bought it from a pet store you should be ok. call the vet and ask just in case. i don't think they even need vaccinations.
