Question:

Are you supposed to tip a hairdresser that works out of her home?

I'm getting my hair done soon by a private hairdresser. I always tip hairdressers that work in regular salons, but I'm confused about private in home salons where the owner is also the sole employer. I'm sure her prices include profit (obviously, lol)

But is it proper to tip or not!?

  1. This is driving me crazy.  The whole world of tipping has gotten out of control, but that's another story.  I know you women have to stick together and have each others' backs, but as a guy who is considering a switch to a private in-home "salon", I don't get your reasoning.  I can go to some random Fantastic Sam's or a place like that and pay $15 bucks for a haircut, knowing that a good portion of it does not go to the person cutting my hair.  If a person working out of their home charges $15 for a cut, and they have nobody taking a portion, no utilities outside of what they pay normally to turn on a light in their home, etc, then why should I even think to tip them?  And don't give me this "because it's a service" - there are far too many services out there that claim a small wage and don't charge tips.  And if you think you need to be making more than your service would bring you, go back to school and pick something that earns more.
