Are you supposed to unplug extension chords when you go on vacation?

I was having a conversation with my friends at lunch and they were saying that it wastes electrity just having the chord in the outlit.

I agree with Deb....for safety sake it is a great idea.  

If you have anything plugged into the extension cord that constantly uses power (like tv, dvd, computer, etc.), then you will also save electricity.

Leaving extension cords plugged in does not waste electricity. Effectively, there is no significant leakage current.

if it's a power strip with that little light yup

and if it's connected to equipment that's on standby waiting to be turned on then yes

but it's pennies
