Are you supposed to wear boxers underneath your board-shorts?

Some of my friends say that you are, some say you don't. I don't know what to do. I am going to be using them for swimming in a pool with friends, so in that situation, should I wear boxers underneath the board shorts or just the board shorts alone?

Board shorts have their origins in surfing.  Swimsuits with liners tend to tangle things up in the surf and so there are no liners in them.  If they are good quality board shorts, they should be designed comfortably up front and are to be worn by themselves.  Most surfers wear nothing under their wet suits and certainly nothing under board shorts.

If you are used to wearing boxers, it should not be difficult to wear board shorts with no underwear.  If you're used to a tighter daily fit, a speedo or swimmer's jock underneath would be good.  Certainly underwear should not be worn under a swimsuit.

Don't wear boxers, they are underwear. Wear a speedo if you feel you need to put something under a pair of boardshorts. I would not wear the shorts, though, just put on a speedo and be more comfortable. You will get a better tan on your legs and they don't chafe your thighs when wet.

If just in a pool with friends, I would wear nothing underneath.

If going in public or mixed company, I would wear speedos or a swim jock underneath. I would not wear boxers because they get too soggy and they dont provide any support or or control.

I would encourage you to wear a brief/speedo underneath (not underwear) your board shorts.  Boardies don't have a liner which can reveal your personal business when sitting or the boardies can come off and then everyone can see your personal business.  You may not like the idea of wearing a brief/speedo, but it would be better to be seen in that than in nothing!

I believe that board shorts are swimming trunks.  Do they have a "net" (supportive area), in them?  If so, they are swimming trunks and you do not need to wear boxers underneath them.  If they do not have a "net", I would almost say that you should get some that do.

No boxers.  Real swimmers (competitive) never wear boxers under the boardshorts and I 've been around a pool for 35 yrs and am 3rd generation swimmer, swim coach, pool rat, life guard (pool and beach) on the East coast

There is a difference between boardshorts and swimming trunks. Swimming trunks have the mesh support. I usually wear a speedo under my boardshorts but only because i play water polo and i have them with me all the time. I would suggest wearing boxers anyway. If i dont have a speedo handy i always wear boxers.
