  1. Not a bit of it.  The TV tells us that times are hard but they aren't really.  Times were "unbelievably" hard during the Thatcher years, but the greed serpent has at last gone from influential politics, thank the maker!!  People believe the TV.  Only those that have realized that the whole mass media apparatus is nothing more than a gigantic lying machine are free to realize that we are being misled.  The problems that are being experienced by our society are the same problems that are being experienced around the whole globe, because capitalism is in crisis.  The mass media exists to protect capitalism, so you'll never be told why the world is in such a mess.  Warfare is the means that capitalism uses to repair itself, ergo there are wars starting.  The last big crisis was in the 1930's.

  2. as a pensioner yes - my luxury is my comp.  I go to bed earlier to keep warm and also this saves on electricity as no lights etc on - only have 2 meals a day instead of 3 cut out all extra insurances just keeping essential ones.

  3. a few years ago my belt was that tight i looked like the number '8'.. fortunately things are a lot easier now...

  4. Trying too . I only buy treats now and again. I walk everywhere. Cut down on electricity and gas. Stopped going out. Only buy essential clothes.

  5. I try to drive the speed limit or a little below to save on gas and I bring my lunch to work.  Other than that I don't really need to do anything.

  6. Tying my hands behind my back to stop me from online shopping.

Seriously though, driving at 55mph to make better use of diesel. Shopping for cheaper brands at the supermarkets. Selling old stuff on ebay instead of throwing it away. Taking on another job.

Lots of ways of saving money if you really try.

  7. I  asked  a  similar  question  last  year  and  was  told by  everyone  on  here  that  i  was  isolating  myself  from  everyone.    Don't  drink  anymore,  smoke,  go  cinema,  pay  for  a  TV  licence.  No  time  to  watch  anyway.  Can't  afford  to  watch  football  or  go  to  the  pub.  I'm  taking  my moped  off  the  road  next  week  so,  no  tax,  insurance  or  (MOT)  Ministry  of  Transport.  No  petrol,  back  to  pedal  power.  YES  the  government's  gonna  LOVE  me.  CAN't  PAY,  WONT  PAY!  Good  question.

  8. my belt has been tightend that much the buckle is at the back now

  9. Not really, though I have gone greener and therefor more energy efficient.Saving money without trying too hard I s'pose.

  10. I have been for a while now, I'm quite good conserving electric and water and i now grow a lot of my own veg, I've cut down on car travel as the fuel price here in Spain are increasing daily, and i now only buy quality food produce with the occasional junk treat.....That's it really, oh i have solar heating which gives plenty of piping hot water for showers etc, so in the event i run out of money i could live off my land...

  11. if you live within your means you cant go wrong.dont buy anything on credit that depreciates.live on baked beans if you have to.until things get better.....But be sure to leave the windows open.....

  12. Yes, it's short sighted to be optimistic until we have a clearer picture of what is going on.

I've stopped going out and I only shop for essentials.  I'm also fanatical now about turning off lights and watching our water usage.

The main problem we have if we go into recession is rising inflation.  Whatever you cut back on then is nullified by rising costs.  Added to that we are nearly on our benders with the extortionate taxes that we pay.  I don't believe that a Labour Government, obsessed with high taxation is going to steer us through a recession.  It's not just a case of tighten your belts, it's a question of hold onto your seat belts.
