Developed nations have about 1/5 the worlds population and use approximately 3/4 of the resources. Developing nations want to emmulate our comfortable lifestyle. Suggestions? Solutions? Or or we heading towards the environmental equivilent of the catestrophic stock market crash of the 20th century?

  1. The best idea would be to implement a 2 child policy in countries where the birth rate is higher than the death rate. This is the case for most of Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. However, some continents such as Europe and Australia are loosing population due to an old population and the lack of baby-boomers. So the population is dispersed very badly throughout the world. If governments don't step in and implement policies we could see as many as 9 billion people as of as soon as 2050. We went from 4 billion to 6 billion from 1970 to 2006. Just imagine how this will continue.

The overpopulation problem contributes to global warming, our heightened economy, etc. And to stop it would be very hard.

There are two theories when it comes to overpopulation:

Malthus (Multhusian): Population will grow until certain checking factors (such as war, disease, famine, drought) reduce it.

    (more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Malt...

Or Boserup (Beserupian): That humanity will overcome overcrowding by the invention of new techniques and technologies that increase food production/cure disease etc.

Either way, our children are going to pay for the lack of resources, global threat, and heightened price of the economy if something is not done soon.

  2. To an extent.  Somehow my generation is getting stuck fixing the deficit and social security, and now overpopulation?  Something is not right.

  3. we do all ready, walk not drive bus not drive, bike not drive, store a neighbor or taxi.

  4. Einstein said it best when he said, "The world today has problems that cannot be solved by thinking the way we thought when we created them." We have to change or the planet's resources will begin to be used up to the point we will be forced to change. So we do it by choice now or by force later.

  5. Developing countries have a HUGE opportunity right now. They can bypass our sorry, energy wasting lifestyle and go straight for a 21st Century clean, renewable lifestyle that will be cheaper to obtain and easier on the environment. There is NO reason we cannot begin farming methanol fuels like 'grassahol' for personal use. The longer we wait, the more money Big Oil will be able to rob us of. STOP WAITING FOR THE GOVERNMENT!
