  1. Absolutely not true.  My father was drafted and served.

  2. I don't know if they could claim an exemption on grounds of

religious beliefs or not but i do know there were plenty of

Jewish men who enlisted to go and fight. There were also

many native Americans who joined in the war to defend the

USA and one of them helped raise the Flag on Imo Jimo.

There are a lot of people who ask for religious deferrments

and most are granted. Sargeant York World War one's

greatest hero asked for a deferment but they drafted him

and he changed his mind. If you look up Tibor Rubin you

will see he won the Medal of Honor and there are at least

17 more Jewish men who have also won the highest medal

you can possiblely win in combat.

  3. Well, there is no draft now, so currently, no young Jewish American men are drafted into the military, because no one is drafted.

    Looking at history, though....

I'm unsure about young Jewish men in particular, and I doubt there was ever a blanket exemption for any faith, but during WWII there was a conscientious objector status that covered anyone whose faith prohibited them from serving in combat. However, at least in some cases, that merely meant being placed in a non-combat position, not avoiding service altogether.

Note that "non-combat" merely meant "not having to fight personally", not "you don't get sent to the front."

That could mean a cushy job back home, but it could also mean a job like "combat medic", which was very dangerous indeed. Many conscientious objectors, though, served with distinction in such roles.
