  1. Most the people who stay in them are not young. You will not look out of place.

  2. It depends on the country you're in. Bavaria in the South of Germany didn't let people under 26 years old stay in its hostels 20 years ago, although this might have changed since. I suggest contacting USIT and asking them because they are the young people travel company.

  3. well they could, but probably be quite awkward. Hostels can get pretty noisy; not exactly the place you go for a good nights sleep - more of somwhere you put your bags, drink a lot and meet people having loud conversations in the hallways!

  4. Last year my son and his wife and child had a super holiday in various youth hostels. They booked ahead and travelled round the lake district quite cheaply.

  5. Yes they can. Many of the youth hostels have private rooms and pretty comfortable surroundings nowadays. My guess is, that in cities the average age of guests is lower than in hostels anywhere else.

  6. In the past they were only for boys and girls in their teens. They would also only to be expected to arrive on foot or under pedal power. The price of a bed, in a dormitory, was very cheap and you were expected to help with chores before leaving the following morning. This included washing up cleaning, changing beds etc.Now they are just cheap hotels and some of them are not that cheap. You do not have to help with chores and breakfast is cooked and served as in a boarding house or hotel and they are open to all ages and you can arrive by car.

  7. yes Stephen, people in their 50s can stay in them these days.
