Are they white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

  1. As I have answered this question many times before.  All equines (horses, donkeys, mules, etc.) have a base coat of either black or brown.  Black is dominant and the convention lists the gene as a E and brown as little e.  So an EE or an Ee equine has a black base and a ee equine will have a brown.

    All other color variation and patterns in the equine world are the result of modifications to the base coat.  For example a paint will have its base coat which is covered up by white patches.  A bay has  a black base but the black is moved to the mane, tail, legs etc. leaving brown on the body.

    Zebras follow the sme rules.  They have a black base coat which is limited to the black stripes by the gene that causes striping.

    Thus they are black with white stripes.
