Are zippo lighters safe?

Question

I am hoping to buy a zippo lighter. My mother wants me to prove that they are safe before I can buy one. Are they safe? I have heard that zippo lighter are safer than matches, because matches slowly burn down the match and can burn your finger. Is this true? Thank-you so much for your help.

truth is zippos  are the best lighters around but like any lighter still need safty at all times  when you fill it up lighter fluid can be on the out side of the lighter and if you light it can catch on fire   always wipe off lighter  be for you light it would be th only  thing to watch out for .

well you have to fill zippo lighters so you have to inhale the fumes and they don't go out like other lighters so there is a high possibility of burning stuff that you don't want to burn like hair or the house they are only safe in capable hands and as long you an insure that you won't put your self or others at risk then go for it

zippo's are the safest lighters out there I've been using them for 20 years.oh don't hold your fingers in the flame and you will not get burned

The REAL issue, is the safety of YOU !!  Just like guns, knives, and other TOOLS... they don't cause damage, it is the USER who causes injury or damage because of:

a) malicious intent

b) foolishness / ignorance

c) mis-use of the tool.

I've had zippo lighters since my 12th birthday in 1976... Dad gave each boy ONE for Boy-Scout / camping purposes.  Of course, if you misused it, you could count on losing the lighter to Dad at least.  Likely it would include a serious grounding.

I've never burned myself with a lighter, but DID over-fill on once... ended up with a slight chemical burn on my thigh from the lighter leaking in my pocket.
