  1. Matters, if it is a large open zoo with the most natural souroundings fo animals, then it is good, but if it is samll and inaccurate then it is horrible. Zoos can also help breed more indangered species.

  2. A lot of these zoo animals are rescued. chimps, orangutans, and other primates are rescued or released from labs when they have outlived their usefulness. if they are lucky they get a home at a zoo where they see grass for the first time in most cases. some have been experimented on too much and have diseases, they are getting the pain medication they desperately need, along with other medical treatments.bears, lions, tigers, and other large cats are rescued from state fairs and apartment living. they are forced to live in cages so small they can't even turn around. sometimes they are lucky enough to get a hose blasted in their face for a drink of water, they don't have a water supply in their cage. if they get lucky enough to get a home in a zoo these cats and bears get to run around and play, they can also climb into a pool or tub of water for the first time. where would these animals be without the zoos?

  3. good because it can help in animal breeding

  4. good for me and bad for animals!

  5. Zoo's save the environment in that when someone wants to see wild animals they can go to a zoo and not abroad.  Animals are largely sociable and when they are left alone they are not happy, they are not happy in cages, but they are well fed and taken care of in zoos.  They may become too reliable on humans which is a danger.

  6. Write in your paper you cant choose between good and bad because it all depends on the trainers. They are good in ways when they educate us on how amazing these animals are. Some zoos however abuse the animals while others spend all their time with them having fun and enjoying life. I love zoos but it definitley hate seeing them behind bars because its sad(its like trapping them for our entertainment). It goes both ways. The austalian zoo is so kind to its animals most def!!!!!!!!!!

  7. By and large bad. I know that the better zoos breed some rare species and then attempt to re-introduce them into the wild with various degrees of success, but imprisoning animals in small pens - animals that are hunter gatherers, is extraordinarily cruel. At the age of 7, I refused to visit any more zoos; forty years later I returned to one and was even more shocked and disgusted. Children and young people have the opportunity to see TV films of animals in their natural habitat or in many cases visit these places on holidays. Even if you live in Britain, a little bit of awareness and knowledge will allow you to observe many different birds and animals in their natural habitat, on a walk in the countryside.

  8. It does not have to be either/or....there are pros and cons.   A zoo with cages too small is plainly bad.    one with plenty of room for the animals and which is protecting endangered species may be doing some good.

Think from the animal's perspective and it will give you a good viewpoint.

  9. it can be reasonably argued that they are bad since no wild animal should be caged. however, the other side to that is that it is better to be able to see a wld animal in a zoo than have to look for it in a museum. zoos are far from ideal, but until we deal with habitat destruction & poaching, it is the only way to hold back a mass extinction (which would drag us down eventually) besides, a world where the only non-human animal life is pets or livestock is a world in need a planet-killing asteroid. if only to erase the vermin species that caused such a mass extinction.

  10. Good if visiting , bad if you are in the cage

  11. In NYC, Bronx Zoo are only one has great habitat for each animals they own, including almost extinct species of Afircan Wild Dog!!

Original Central Park Zoo was bad because they used cages, but now it's GOOD and they have great habitat for each animals!!

  12. This depends very much on the zoo.

If you look at the zoo in Jersey set up and run by Gerald Durrel  who is dedicated to breeding endangered species as one means to ensure their survival.

His early efforts at captive breeding were denounced by prominent zoologists as unnecessary and irrelevant. Since 1963 he has established breeding groups of many species of endangered mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and has pioneered the return of their progeny to the wild.  His efforts are now universally acknowledged as an important weapon in the fight to save animals from extinction, these zoos are necessary

Zoos like this have an important part to play in education, conservation and research of our wildlife.  Those zoos who have these as their main objectives are run in a way which preserves the dignity of their animals and provides the best conditions available.

There are however many zoos in the world which are run just for profit where the animals are kept in dreadful conditions and these places should of course be closed down.

  13. This completely depends on the zoo.  Most of your large zoos (ie. National Zoo, Lowry Park Zoo, San Diego, etc.)  take extremely good care of their animals.  Zoos also work together in an effort to repopulate dwindiling species.  Humans encrouched upon the animals habitat, and brought them close to extinction the least we can do is attempt to repopulate these species.  The positives with accredited zoos outnumber the negetives.  Animals are also rescued and rehabilitated in zoos.  Some animals are too injured to be released, these animals would die in the wild, but in these zoos they recieve proper medical attention and their lives are prolonged.  Accredetid zoos, such as the ones I mentioned above are very beneficial to the public and to many animals.

  14. OK, so it is bad for the animals most of the time, but sometimes is good when they are endangered or were previously treated poorly.

  15. I LOVE animals sooo much! I think zoos are good because they sell education about animals.

  16. Hi

Well seeing as we the human race are doing our best to destroy the world I suppose that Zoos will become a safe haven for the animals who's homes we're destroying, even the common all garden hedgehog's now on the endangered species list, I think that says it all, don't you?

    Ray. West York's. U.K.

  17. thats the problem they are good and bad some are really bad they dont feed the animals properly they abuse them and then they get taken away and put in a bigger facility and a better cleaner zoo.. go to IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS you will see which zoos are the best and which ones are having problems and being threatened to be closed down.  theres one in california thats really bad and elephants are dying because of neglect

  18. You have answered your own question. There are good and bad points to Zoo's.

Bad (i.e. cruel to keep animals locked up)

Good (keeps animals approaching extinction protected)

Can't you do both and then argue each side, that would make a stronger essay that just one view.

  19. i think they are good because they educate people on wildlife and they encouage conservation

  20. Guess it depends on the zoo.

Take monkey world (in the UK) for example; they rescue primates that would have a horrible unnatural life otherwise, they have breeding programmes for rare species to try and boost numbers.

But that is only one side. I would imagine most reputable zoos will have some kind of breeding programme for rare animals.

But then it raises the question as to weather keeping animals 'behind bars' is fair? If an animal is doing perfectly fine in the wild i think it is unfair to cage it and stick it in a zoo. But if it is endangered and under threat or being treated cruelly i think a good zoo is the best option.

  21. they are a good place to visit but a bad place to stay

  22. I would hate to be stuck in a cage for the rest of my life and have kids throwing candy at me.

  23. I think zoos are good; they are jail for wild animals, which are problematic to human life or caught when they were struggling for their survival (injured or suffering from any dieses).  Rather than killing them giving life sentence is better.  Along with this they are acting good study center for students and urban population.  But yes proper care of these animals should be insured.

  24. Better than zoos are wildlife preserves.  Any place that truly attempts to duplicate the natural living environment of the animal is better than a cage with a concrete floor.  Preserves allow for the animals to be protected, but still live the type of life they are supposed to.  They also allow for the animals to be studied more closely, as they are still contained.  I think that the preserve is a happy medium between a zoo and simply letting animals be completely on their own.

  25. Use the animal kingdom and how good it is at making the closwers not smell and feeding well and cleaning the habitat those animals are definitly happy

  26. Groups like PETA only show you the worst things about keeping animals then makes it look like everybody does it that way. There are over 10,000 big cats in captivity in the U.S. Out of that only one person a year is killed by a big cat. You are more likely to die from lightning or from falling out of bed. More people get killed by run away race cars but I don't see anyone trying to ban NASCAR.

Most zoos do a lot of good. They provide a good life to their animals, they educate the public, they do research and conservation projects around the world, and zoos DO occasionaly release animals back into the wild. PETA tends to leave those detailes out when they tell you about zoos.

PETA and the HSUS are not what they claim to be. They believe in total animal liberation which means that they think that there should be no circuses, zoos (even AZA), laboratories (even medical), farms, service dogs, police dogs, and PETS of any kind. They believe that animals are better off DEAD then living with even the best pet owner.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) collected millions of dollars from individuals to save the animals during Katrina. They did not use the money to do that though. They are currently under investigation for it. What most people do not realize about HSUS is that they are not your local animal shelter. None of the money that they raise goes to the local animal shelter. It has also been provened that PETA uses its money to kill animals and support terrorist groups like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) who has a tendency to blow up buildings to get their point across.

I am not saying that you shouldn't neuter/spay your pet, I am just saying that the choose should be up to the owner and not animal rights extremists. Groups like these are mislabeling breeders and passing mandatory spay/neutered laws as part of their total animal liberation plan.

  27. Take it from the Animals perspective.  What do they think?

  28. I think both!!

for the bad, I am not really keen on animals in cages...it seems unnatural.  They should be in their natural habitat.

For the good, it allows a lot of people (including kids) to see a lot of animals up close and personal.    It also helps to protect some animals that are on the endangered list and promote breeding of these animals.

It is a shame that we have to have zoos, but it is nice too, so there you have it, both good and bad.

  29. I think they are bad. Animals should be free and not cooped up in a cage.

  30. good in the respect that they do prevent extinction
