I am trying to find out how much materal is need to make a tent. The tent is 6ft deep with a height peak at 4 ft. I don't kow how to draw a diagram for you here. but i'll try

/___I___\______6_______\

I want the amount of materal needs include a floor? Please show me how you got your answer! Thanks a bunch!

  1. Assuming the floor area is 6ft x 6ft square

    This gives a triangle at the door and rear of tent of 6ft base and 4ft height this is actually 2 right angle triangles of 3ft base and 4ft height giving a hypotenuse of 5ft (classic 3,4,5 triangle)

    The tent can be then be broken down into 3 basic different shapes Triangle Square and Rectangle

    Work out the areas for each side and add together

    Triangle area = 1/2 base x perpendicular ht = 3 x 4 = 12

    Rectangle area = width x length = 5 x 6 = 30

    Square floor Side x side = 6 x 6 = 36

    2 x Triangles 1 Front and 1 Back

    2 X Rectangles Diagonal roof left and Right

    1 x Square floor

    So total = (2 x 12) + (2 x 30) + (1 x 36) = 24 + 60 + 36 = 120 Sqft

    Remember to add a little extra all round for stitching and gluing

  2. the surface area of a triangular prism is

    SA = 2B + Ph

    SA = 2(1/2ab) + (b + c + d)h

    SA = ab + (b + c + d)h

    B is area of base, P is perimeter of base. (triangles are bases)

    you should have given the angle formed between the lateral sides of the tent.

    assuming that the area of the floor and the sides are the same.

  3. if the floor is a square 6ft x 6ft = 36ft^2 and central height is 4ft then the four isosceles triangles forming the four slant surfaces will sum up to

    4 x (1/2)(6ft)(5ft) = 60ft^2 from slant height^2 = (6ft/2)^2 + (4ft)^2 = (5ft)^2

    hence total material needed is (60+36)ft^2 = 96ft^2.
