  1. There are lots of good places to visit near Manchester. Less than an hour away by train are Chester (an old Roman town with a picturesque centre and nice river walks) http://www.visitchester.co.uk/ and Liverpool (Eurpoean capital of culture 2008 with with great museums and art galleries and a lively nightlife) http://www.visitliverpool.com/

The journey from Manchester to London takes around an hour and twenty minutes. Trains leave regularly and you can find schedules, maps and fares on www.nationalrail.co.uk

Rail passes are a good buy if you plan on making many journeys by train and you can find out more and buy them in advance on www.visitbritaindirect.com or there are rail passes available in the UK for students and seniors http://www.railcard.co.uk/

  2. Check out www.visitmanchester.com and www.visitlondon.com
