We're moving to Killeen, TX since my husband is going to be stationed at Hood, and we will be waiting forever for on post housing. What are some areas to avoid in Killeen? I have two 18 month olds and don't want to end up in a bad neighborhood.

  1. s***w everyone who says to avoid all of Killeen!!  I'M FROM KILLEEN AND PROUD OF IT!!!

You might actually get into post housing fairly quickly.  I get the Phantom Distro in my email everyday and I'm always seeing that housing is available and that they're actually begging people to live on post.

Good places in Killeen is anything South of HWY 190 or the southern part of Harker Heights.  Copperas Cove isn't that bad either.  It's mostly for those who want a small country-town feeling.  I live off Stan Schlueter Loop in Lonesome Dove Estates.  It's a pretty quiet neighborhood so I can't complain too much.  There are houses being built everywhere on this road.  Avoid living in 4plexes communities...to much drama goes on in those areas.  Some 4-plexes are built in the midst of single family homes, which are ok areas.  Duplexes are fine.  Some are extremely nice and are almost as big as a regular house.

Just don't live anywhere off Rancier or in the downtown area.  Don't stay on any of the numbered street, no matter how nice it looks.  Seriously....

The farther away you live from post, the earlier your husband is going to have to wake up for PT.  Traffic in the mornings, lunch time and after work are H-E-L-L!!  If distance is of no problem to you, there are nice housing areas in Belton and Temple which is right off the I-35 corridor.

Like any fast growing town, expect to hear about violence, accidents and such.  It's a town that's growing way too fast.

  2. You should avoid all of Killeen!

  3. Many of the military seems to live in Harker Heights, so that should be okay.   Salado is very expensive, so if you've the money, that's the place to live.

  4. Personaly i would aviod fort hood. Lol. Good luck to you.
