I think perhaps alter-egos are either the person we wish we were or they are the real person inside us.

I think alter egos are for people who don't feel comfortable being themselves, so they need to create this other person in order to be real.  I'm me 24/7, no alter needed.

Now if you're Batman or Wonder Woman or something, alter egos are the best!

i agree, but wouldnt that really be considered split personalities? I think we all have them, we act different in different situations, some better than others.
