I thought everyone kept telling me she can start the cereal flakes at 4 months.......so then why don't her 4th & 5th month WIC checks have baby cereal? She's still got formula checks until she's 6 months old. Even if it's not on a WIC check can I go ahead and buy cereal flakes for her next month separately?

  1. that is because you aren't suppose to start until 6 months.

  2. The most recent recommendation by the AAP and WHO is that solids (including cereal) be delayed until the child is at least 6 months old.  UNLESS it ha been discussed with your child's doctor to introduce solids early.

  3. Yes, most babies can start on rice cereal at 4 months old.

Why they don't include this - babies don't need to be fed cereal, esp. breastfed babies, until 6 months of age.  They can be fed between 4-6 months old.  So I guess if the government doesn't have to hand out the money, then they won't.

The AAP says between 4-6 months on the AAP website:

  4. You can start cereal at 4 months. Some people recommend it some don't. It's up to you, There is nothing wrong with it, it has been done forever until now. Now some people say you shouldn't. I did it. My daughter does just fine now at 6 months.

  5. You don't ever have to give the cereal if you don't want to. It's parent's choice. I started my son at a young age because of reflux, and now at 7 months he's eating almost all stage 2 solids. You don't have to give your little one cereal, it's just a stepping stone that you can use or not. At 4 months old if you want to try it you can. The boxes of cereal are pretty cheap, should be less than 2 dollars a box for gerber cereals. If you do try it, go slow at first, only a few bites for the first little while until you know that she's tolerating it and ready.

  6. Thats weird..my WIC gave it at 4 months but she really didn't start till 7.5.

If YOU think the baby is ready try a bit but make it THIN

  7. they say around 4-6 months. If she shows signs that sh eis ready then go for it. You are her mother so its your choice.
