Aren't students supposed to go to school 180 days?

I live in GA. and our school went 184 days according to the school calendar on the website. I checked next year's calendar and it was 183 days. I know students have to go 180, but do some counties add a few days for any reason?

  1. Snow days.

  2. The state requirements are usually the minimum possible, but most schools do add days to make up complete weeks, at the very least.

  3. Yes.  The 180 is a minimum.  Districts can add more.

    Mine does.  :-(

  4. to make sure you learn what you need to know

the 180 is a minimum, not a maximum

  5. Actually, if I remember correctly from some recent conversations in my building, it isn't the number of days, but number of minutes/hours that children are in school.  I am pretty sure the state mandates the number of hours students are to be in school, and days are variable as long as the hours are in.

For example, a district near where I teach added 5 minutes to the start of the day and 10 minutes to the end of the school day and they were able to cut out 11 days of school off the calendar.  It can save districts a lot of money to do that, as they don't need to pay busses/hourly employees/food service, etc for the extra days.
